Guilford Technical Community College Selects Three Finalists for Next President

JAMESTOWN, N.C. – Guilford Technical Community College’s Presidential Selection Committee has selected three finalists to be presented to and interviewed by the Board of Trustees for the next president of GTCC. The finalists were selected after an extensive nationwide search that attracted a strong and diverse pool of over 70 applicants.

The three finalists (in alphabetical order) and their current positions are:

Paul Broadie II, Ph.D.

Dr. Paul Broadie II currently serves as president of Gateway Community College in New Haven, Connecticut, and Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He previously served as vice president for student services at Orange County Community College in Middletown, New York. 

Dr. Broadie earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Human Resource Studies at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado; a Master of Business Administration in Marketing at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York; and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Anthony J. Clarke, Ph.D.

Dr. Anthony J. Clarke serves as president of Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, North Carolina. He previously served as vice president of instruction at Richmond Community College in Hamlet, North Carolina.

Dr. Clarke earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Organizational Behavior at Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, Ohio; a Master of Business Administration in Business Policy at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois; a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky; and a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering and Military Studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Walter A. Tobin, Ph.D.

Dr. Walter A. Tobin is president of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he was also vice president for academic affairs. He previously served as interim president of Denmark Technical College in Denmark, South Carolina.

Dr. Tobin earned a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Education in Educational Administration at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Math Teaching from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.

The three finalists will visit GTCC July 22-24 to meet with faculty, staff, students and members of the community. Each candidate will participate in two public forums, which will be held in the Koury Hospitality Auditorium on the main campus in Jamestown and the GTCC Conference Center Auditorium at the Donald W. Cameron Campus in Colfax. The scheduled sessions will also be streamed live for online viewing. The schedule for each candidate follows:

Monday, July 22

Dr. Paul Broadie II

  • Noon to 1 p.m., Koury Hospitality Auditorium, GTCC Jamestown Campus
  • 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., GTCC Conference Center Auditorium, Cameron Campus
Tuesday, July 23

Dr. Walter Tobin

  • Noon to 1 p.m., Koury Hospitality Auditorium, GTCC Jamestown Campus
  • 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., GTCC Conference Center Auditorium, Cameron Campus
Wednesday, July 24

Dr. Anthony Clarke

  • Noon to 1 p.m., Koury Hospitality Auditorium, GTCC Jamestown Campus
  • 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., GTCC Conference Center Auditorium, Cameron Campus

Following these sessions, formal interviews with each of the candidates will be conducted by the Board of Trustees. The trustees will make a final decision at its Aug. 7 board meeting and submit the finalist to the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges for approval. The college anticipates announcing the next president in mid to late August.

GTCC’s Presidential Selection Committee was comprised of trustees, faculty and community leaders, including George Ragsdale, Chair, Board of Trustees, GTCC; Jarvis Harris, Committee Chair, Presidential Search Committee and Trustee, GTCC; Susan Alt, Former Board Chair and Trustee, GTCC; Brent Christensen, President & CEO, Greensboro Chamber of Commerce; Kevin Crowder, Faculty Association President, GTCC; Abdurrahman Henderson, Former Student Government Association President, GTCC; Allison Mullins, Trustee, GTCC; and Lisa Stahlmann, Trustee, GTCC.

The search for GTCC’s eighth president began earlier this year when GTCC President Dr. Randy Parker announced his retirement effective July 31, 2019. Dr. Parker has served as president since 2011.

The Association of Community Colleges Trustees (ACCT) is assisting GTCC with the search and selection process.
